Stephy Chua Is a 20 year old , a second-year Biological Sciences student cum part-time dance teacher.
Though her love affair with dance only began five years ago, she was crowned champion in a nationwide Jennifer Lopez dance competition last year.
Previously, she also won Jurong Junior College’s talent time in 2003, as well as choreographed and performed for the opening of Jam Fest 2004, an NTU joint-hall band performance.
Stephy’s students come from all walks of life and all ages, ranging from teenage students to office executives.
Her jobs come from impressed friends who have seen her dance, such as Mitran Balakrishnan, 22, a second-year Civil Engineering student, who said: “Stephy is a fantastic dancer.”
Her biggest upcoming project is for Young PAP, where members will perform at nightspot DXO in early October.
Stephy said: “It is very stressful as most of my students from Young PAP are much older than me, and they’ll be performing to important guests like ministers and the media.”
This gregarious young lady has come across students who have difficulty coordinating their movements while dancing and also those with larger physiques who think they are unable to dance. Yet after a few sessions, they actually proved themselves to be potentially good dancers.
“I hope to prove that people don’t need to have experience or a good physique to dance well. Anyone can do it!” said Stephy, who charges about $25 per hour for her classes.
This rate is negotiable and dependent on the scale of the performance as well as its duration and difficulty.
However, this part-time job comes with its fair share of sacrifices.
Balancing schoolwork, dance training and her personal life is no easy feat.
Stephy admitted: “Catching up with tutorial work after giving a tiring dance class is almost impossible.”
Not surprisingly, Stephy’s idol is Jennifer Lopez, though she acknowledges that her dance style is influenced by other pop stars like Beyonce and Britney Spears. Despite this, she is unwilling to copy anyone’s style.
“I prefer to be original and come up with my own steps,” she said.
Being such a good dancer, anyone would think that Stephy is a regular at clubs every week.
Asked if she clubs, she laughingly replied: “I don’t have the time to club!"
