Chino Prison Riot ! Chino Prison ! Chino
Prison officials are trying to control a riot that erupted at the California Institution for Men in Chino tonight and has sent several inmates to the hospital.
The riot started at about 8:20 p.m. at the Reception Center West facility, a medium-security housing facility with seven units, each with about 200 inmates, said prison spokesman Lt. Mark Hargrove.
The rioting began at one unit and spread, he said. At least one unit was in flames, and another might have had a small fire, Hargrove said. The inmates self-evacuated into a yard, but Hargrove could not say whether everyone was out of the building.
Several injured inmates were taken to hospitals, Hargrove said.
Other prison facilities are on lockdown and are under control, he added.
Chino Valley firefighters, Chino police, San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies and Ontario police were at the scene.
Officials are working together to control inmates and return them to other facilities, Hargrove said.
